Planting Shrubs and Hedges

The key to success with your new shrubs begins with correct planting. Sure, buying a healthy plant and handling it gently certainly helps, but a good new home is so important. It gets the newcomer off to a strong start, so it can thrive and you can enjoy it! The following sections explain how to do it right.

Getting new shrubs into the ground

Shrubs grown in containers are planted the same way container-grown trees are planted, as Chapter 11 discusses. When you’re ready to plant bareroot shrubs, follow these steps:

Set the base of the roots on a cone of soil in the middle of the hole (see Figure 12-1).

Adjust the cone height so that the plant sits slightly higher (1 to 2 inches, 2.5 to 5.1 cm) than it was originally planted in the nursery (you can see a change in color from light to dark along the trunk, which tells you where the original soil line was. To check planting depth, simply lay a stick across the top of the hole.) Spread out the roots in different directions and then refill the hole.
